Myth: Infertility Can't Happen to Me

Infertility Myth:  Infertility Can't Happen to Me

Fertility Fact:  Infertility affects 7.3 million people of childbearing age in the United States -- about 10-15 percent of the reproductive-age population, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

We all hope and wish this disease happens to no more couples who are wanting biological children but until there is a cure for Infertility we must stay educated and educate those around us about the disease.

I hope you enjoyed learning some new things about Infertility Week here at The Domestic Princess. Tell me, what was your favorite Myth we busted?

Myth: Couples who "work" hard enough at having a baby will eventually get pregnant

Infertility Myth: Couples who "work" hard enough at having a baby will eventually get pregnant.

Fertility Fact: Infertility is still a disease and cannot always be resolved

According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), more than half of all couples who pursue treatment will achieve a successful pregnancy. On the other hand, it's important to remember that infertility is a medical disease and that problems sometimes remain untreatable -- no matter how hard a couple "works" at solving them.

Myth: It’s easier and cheaper to adopt than to use fertility treatments

Infertility Myth: It’s easier and cheaper to adopt than to use fertility treatments. Couples who seek out fertility treatments instead of adopting are just being selfish.

Fertility Facts: Adoption isn’t as easy as they portray in the movies. Unlike Annie, you can’t just walk into an orphanage and pick a child to take home the same day.

While adoption is a beautiful process it is often way more expensive than fertility treatments. Adoption can range from $5,000 to $30,000 depending on what kind of Adoption is pursued. Also, this process can take several months to several years before a couple is placed with a child. In addition to the money, adoptive parents go through a range of emotions. Most couples must grieve the loss of their own biological child before they can move on to Adoption.

As for being selfish, the desire to have children is biological and deeply rooted. To call wanting a child of your own selfish is the same as calling the desire to have a home selfish.

Myth: Couples who suffer from infertility probably wouldn’t be good parents anyway

Infertility Myth: Couples who suffer from infertility probably wouldn’t be good parents anyway.

Fertility Facts: Infertility is a medical condition, not nature's way of natural selection.

There are so many bad parents out there who have no trouble having children, and plenty of couples who struggle with getting pregnant who become wonderful parents. Your fertility doesn’t say anything about your parenting ability. In fact, a couple who experience infertility may become stronger parents, because they may have a greater appreciation for the miracle that a child is. Don’t they always say that you appreciate things the more you have to fight for it?

Myth: If you just calm down, stop trying, and go on vacation for awhile, then you'll get pregnant.

Infertility Myth: If you just calm down, stop trying, and go on vacation for awhile, then you'll get pregnant.

Fertility Facts: Infertility is not a psychological disorder.

If I had a dollar for every time someone has told me this in the last two years, I'd be able to afford IVF (probably twice). Well I'm here to tell you we've calmed down, not thought about it, have been on two vacations and we're still not pregnant.  I know personally we didn't start becoming "open" with our Infertility  until we had a diagnosis. So, when this is said to an Infertile it feels like you are dismissing a medical problem that they have probably already been diagnosed with. It's hurtful. A better statement to make is to say "I'm sorry you are going through this" or "That must be hard for you guys" These are great empathetic statements that would make any Infertile feel like you care about them and their feelings.

Myth: Marriages rarely survive infertility struggles

Infertility Myth: Marriages rarely survive infertility struggles

Fertility Fact: The majority of couples manage infertility challenges effectively. In the process, they can learn new ways of relating to each other, improve their understanding of different coping styles, and deepen their communication, which actually serves to improve their relationship.

We are one of those couples. Yes, this has been the hardest thing we have encountered in our marriage but it has created a bond between Chris and I that we will never forget. We have learned how to be strong for the other person, when we are struggling to stand on our own two feet. Knowing that makes us have even more respect and love for each other. We are lucky to be going through this with the strongest person we know (each other) right by our sides.
