When we first arrived at Reproductive Gynecology Inc., the place was decorated like a Victoria's Secret. My first instinct was "We can't afford this, what are we doing here?" While we waited Chris and I text back and forth (yes sitting right next to each other) about being scared and upset about this appointment. Ok, Ok, we may have talked about a few people in the waiting room too.
Once we were called back we met with a nurse who was very awkward to talk to and I was hoping that all the staff wasn't like this. Luckily they were not, as soon as Dr. Maseelall walked in the room, Chris and I were at ease. She was very easy to talk to and very straight forward about our options. She recommended that our best chance for success would be IVF (In Vitro Fertilization). But with Chris's numbers she may recommend an IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) but only gives a 5-7% chance of success with that option. After that she recommended just a little bit more testing for us. All bloodwork.
Dr. Maseelall also talked to us a about a program called Compassionate Care. It's program setup by Serono Laboratories to provide underinsuranced/no insurance couples a chance at getting free IVF drugs for one cycle. Wow, I didn't even know programs like this existed. Chris and I will be applying for this program and keeping our fingers crossed that we get accepted. IVF drugs can run around $4,000 per cycle.
Dr. Maseelall is going to have their financial counselor call me to give me a breakdown of the cost but her estimate was around $12,000. It costs about $7,000 for Egg Retrieval, Fertilization and Egg Implantation. The another $4,000 for medications.
Chris and I are still taking in all in information we received yesterday. We both very much want a child of our own. Chris has the cutest curly hair, it's why I married him. We're just not ready to give up on the dream yet. But since our insurance does not cover one dime of Infertility we will be saving for a while before we will actually be able to make an IVF cycle happen. The goal is this time next year.
I don't think I say this enough to all of you: THANK YOU SO MUCH for all the support you give us. If I could I would give you each a hug. Chris and I appreciate you all more than you will ever know.
